Going to a gig is more than just a watching, enjoying, dancing to a set from your fave band or that hidden gem on the bill you'd never heard about...
Going to a gig is a whole night out, from how you get there, to where you meet your friends preshow, the show itself, and where to head to keep the night going!
So this is a simple go-to guide for how to get the best out of your next great gig at Modern Sky Lab, Yuyintang Park, The Pearl, MAO Livehouse, and LOFAS!
MODERN SKY LAB
3F Moon Shopping Mall, 188 Ruihong Lu
Subway line 4: Siping Road, exit 1 or 4
Subway Line 10: Youdian Xincun, exit 1
Modern Sky Lab is located in a shopping mall - like most of Shanghai, it seems sometimes - so there are plenty of options. There's My Butchery Table on the first floor for some fine cuts of meat, Taiwanese chain Cou Cou Hot Pot on the second floor - both good for decent food and a few beers before going to shake it at MSL.
Ex-Libertine, writer, actor Carl Barat returns! After his success last year during his China Tour, he is back again! Grab your spot for the show quickly, it's filling up fast!
The pace of life in Shanghai can be overwhelming at times, so why not unwind and escape from it all? A man of the people, Wan Xiaoli brings a brand of music that balances deeper issues of everyday life with soothing music that will put you in a trance. Don't miss this to be soothed and swayed by Wan Xiaoli!
LOVE SOUND FOM BERLIN
Dr. Motte initiated the Loveparade movement - the feeling of unity, peace, and love all blossoming under millions of roaring echoes from technoculture on the streets of Berlin 30 years ago. Today Dr. Motte blends pop music culture and top of the chart rhythms that will keep you on your feet all night. His vision is for you to dance among strangers, break through social boundaries, create common ground for people, celebrate the pleasures life has to offer. Your ticket to an open mind is waiting!
Really depends on what kind of show you've seen - it gets diverse at MSL as you can see! Unless you live in Yangpu (nothing wrong with that), you'll most likely wanna head back into town. If you do live in Yangpu, Whatever Cafe Pub (132 Guanglang 1st Rd) is a good shout. If you're heading back into town, stop at Patch Bar (No. 123, Lane 950 Zhenhua Lu) on your way.
B102, 1398 Yuyuan Lu
Line 2/3/4: Zhongshan Park, exit 5 [line 2]
Line 2/11: Jiangsu Road, exit 7 [longer walk]
Located on the B1 level of MIXPACE, there's a bunch of options for before the show, as well as the great long bar in YYT Park itself. There is of course also Homeslice Pizza on L1 where you can get a couple of killer slices and a beer for less than a hundred. And, if you're feeling fancy, the fab Mr Pawpaw which offers cracking Thai food.
NEVER DID A POPULAR THING...COULDN'T SELL OUT A TELEPHONE BOOTH...THE PROUD...THE FEW...THE DESCENDENTS! With that tongue-in-cheek battle cry, the nerdsome foursome have again declared war against mediocrity. It's time to strap on your glasses, wipe your nose on your sleeve, and launch into the slam pit chanting the Descendents' "I'M NOT A LOSER" refrain like a mantra!
Praised for their music being sunny, viby, and reminiscent of cool summer breezes, these brilliant guys from Moscow came up with their own genre of music: new wave / 80s pop injected with a shot of funk/disco and Motown. Pompeya has gained massive success internationally and, finally in Shanghai, Pompeya will perform their newest LP "Dreamers" for us to enjoy!
For something a little different - these guys have a lil bit of everything in their music. And though still relatively new on the scene, this talented four-piece has grown explosively! Their songs are like a fun, let your hair down, cinematic joyride through a 00s movie – so don’t miss ‘em!
There's only one place to go after a night at YYT Park: Specters. Find the Rock'n'Roll dive bar par excellence in Building D, 753 Yuyuan Road - in exchange for your dignity you'll get great tunes and cheap Fireball shots: a fair trade.
471 Zhapu Lu, near Wujin Lu Hongkou
Subway Line 10: Sichuan North Road, exit 2
The Pearl is right in the heart of Hongkou district, which is full of little nooks to explore and traditional eateries like Xiao Nan Guo at 269 Haining Road and Hai Di Lao hot pot opposite, a short walk away. The Pearl itself offers a cracking dinner service and dinnertime Happy Hour specials, so make it simple for yourself and get there early for dinner and drinks!
The Show Must Go On! And tonight we're gonna have ourselves a real good time as The Pearl are throwing an all night tribute to Queen! It's a night of Stadium Rock, Glam, Operatic vocals when Shanghai's finest musicians pay tribute to one of the world's all time greatest bands in a show full of their greatest hits. So, grab your best friends and get your on bike and ride to the show that will rock you!

If you're a fan of Prince you can't miss this! The legend himself was taken from this world too early so we're coming together at The Pearl for a night of dancing in celebration of his greatest works. Let us unite under the Purple Rain, flash the Diamonds and Pearls our mommas gave us, Kiss strangers under the rising sun, and dance the night away! Let's Go Crazy!
ROCK OF AGES
Rock of Ages takes you on a ride of hits through the 70s, 80s, 90s up to the present hits. The Pearl’s Red Stars are gonna rock you and get you up dancing with hits from ABBA to Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson to Queen and everything in between. For only 100RMB you get a night of rocking music and two free drinks to get you in the dancing mood!

While you could always head south to The Bund to somewhere like The Captain, which has great views and drink prices that won't leave you broke; if you're looking for a cool down - head to YYs, which is the B1 level of 125 Nanchang Road.
3F, 308 Chongqing Nan Lu, near Jianguo Zhong Lu
Line 9/13: Madang Road, exit 4
Starting an evening at Sinan Mansions is never gonna be a bad night - though be careful of too many stronger brews at Boxing Cat, as I discovered before Beach Fossils last year...For something a bit more chilled, the Hong Kong 8 Restaurant next door to MAO is a good shout.
They're "LAIDBACK" yet "DON'T HESITATE" about proving to the rest of the world that they're here for a good time not a long time. Rat Boy is a wonderful clash of genres: indie rock, punk, and hip hop. With lyrics that are almost too relatable to the misunderstood youth, they come to bring you riot-like vibes with just the right amount of intensity.
21 year old up & coming pop sensation, Beatrich is coming to SH to slayy! She puts the "Lit" in Lithuanian - and though she admits she's not a hardcore partier herself, her music definitely instigates a night-out vibe. Listen to her hit, "Superstar" and get a feel for how mellow yet, on beat she is. If you dig Tove Lo and Dua Lipa, then you'll love Beatrich (;
Tommy Emmanuel is 1 of 5 people ever to be named a Certified Guitar Player. How? He's been immersed in music since the age of 3 and has mastered the guitar. He's played sold out shows, has multiple Grammy nominations among other awards & only continues to get better, aging like a fine wine. Witness his talent this May!
There's plenty around MAO Livehouse, personal favorites include Tianzifang (210 Taikang Road), which is tons of fun and has great bars like Bell Bar. Or, walk back north to the Sinan Mansions (Lane 507 Middle Fuxing Road), which are stocked full of late night bars and restaurants.
B1-09, 230 Ruiping Road Xuhui
Line 7/12: Middle Longhua Road, exit 5
LOFAS is on the B1 level of a shopping mall, so there are plenty of good options, plus the cafe inside the venue itself. Personally, whenever playing or going to a show at LOFAS I like to head first to Charlie's, which is the same side of the mall as the subway exit and is just. so. damn. good!
FULL METAL FEST vol. 1
Get ready to headbang along to Shanghai's best metal bands! with some pretty rad metal bands. Featuring two kings of the scene WARSHAPED and Alpaca, who have shaped the very essence of Shanghai's metal landscape, this is gonna be a mosher to remember!
Anyone that listens to Ally Kerr will immediately pick up on the unique Scottish folk feel to his music. His latest album gives a whole new meaning to dreamy but with an unusual hint of melancholy that'll have you captivated at the first song. Don't miss your chance to take a wistful journey through melodic gems at Ally's intimate concert here in Shanghai!
Long established as HK's best underground rapper and now fast up and coming on the international scene, Dough-Boy is coming to a club near you! His unique upbringing shines through an eclectic, East meets West hip-hop style - shown nowhere better than on his new record that dropped just a couple weeks back. This is gonna be one hell of a lit set - you don't wanna miss it, we guarantee it!
Though there's a fair bit in the shopping mall itself, there's not a huge amount usually going on post show. So, better to head back into the center of town, straight up line 7 to Changshu Road if early enough or in a Didi if not, and heading to somewhere like Abbey Road, at 3-1 Taojiang Road.
